A potential customer asks ChatGPT which software suits their business, searches Perplexity for a service comparison, or asks a voice assistant for a nearby supplier. Your website may be relevant without appearing in the answer.

Answer Engine Optimization (AEO) is the practice of making information easier for answer systems to discover, interpret and use when responding to questions. It combines technical accessibility, clear answers and credible evidence.

For SMEs and marketing agencies, the goal is not simply another ranking. It is making your business a useful source when buyers ask questions that matter commercially.

AEO starts with the question, not the keyword

Traditional SEO and AEO share foundations: accessible pages, useful content, internal links and trust. AEO adds a specific editorial requirement: each important page should answer an identifiable question.

A keyword such as “accounting software” describes a topic. A question such as “Which accounting software supports multiple companies?” reveals a requirement.

Build your content around three question types:

  • Discovery: What solution exists for this problem?
  • Evaluation: How do the options differ in features, cost and limitations?
  • Decision: Does this supplier support my location, workflow or requirements?

Use sales conversations, support requests and search-query data to identify real questions. Give each page a clear purpose rather than adding every possible question to one oversized FAQ.

ChatGPT, Perplexity and voice search need different checks

These interfaces do not use one universal source-selection process. Treat them as separate discovery environments.

ChatGPT

ChatGPT can answer with or without web retrieval, depending on the mode and request. When it searches the web, accessible pages with clear, relevant information can become potential sources.

A brand mention is not necessarily a citation. Track whether an answer names your business, links to your website and accurately describes your offer.

Perplexity

Perplexity commonly presents answers with linked sources. Test the questions buyers ask and inspect which pages support its responses.

Look beyond the headline. Does the cited passage provide a definition, comparison, specification or explanation? That reveals the information your competing page needs to address—not wording to copy.

Voice search

Voice interfaces vary by provider, device and query. Some draw on search results, business listings or other data sources.

For local businesses, accurate opening hours, contact details, service areas and business profiles are practical priorities. Write short answers that make sense aloud, without relying on a table or surrounding text.

Make important pages technically accessible

An answer-ready paragraph has limited value if the relevant retrieval system cannot access it.

Start with these checks:

  • Important pages return successful responses and are not unintentionally blocked.
  • Canonical URLs and indexing directives are consistent.
  • Internal links lead to service, product and explanatory pages.
  • XML sitemaps contain the URLs you want discovered.
  • Essential information is available in accessible page content.
  • Mobile visitors can read and navigate the page comfortably.

Review crawler controls deliberately. Search crawling, user-triggered retrieval and model-training collection are different activities; permission for one does not automatically determine the others.

An llms.txt file can provide an additional guide for systems that choose to use it. It is not a universal submission mechanism or a guarantee of AI visibility.

Write answers that survive being quoted

A useful answer passage should remain accurate when extracted from its page.

Place a direct answer immediately below a descriptive heading. Then add conditions, evidence and practical detail.

For example, under “Can you migrate our existing CRM?”, avoid:

We offer flexible solutions tailored to your needs.

A stronger answer, if accurate, would be:

We migrate CRM contacts, companies and deal records. Before confirming the scope, we review the source platform, data quality and required field mappings.

The second version establishes the service and its limits.

Apply the same structure to pricing, compatibility, delivery times and eligibility:

  1. Answer the question.
  2. State important conditions.
  3. Explain the process or provide evidence.
  4. Link to the relevant next step.

Avoid unsupported superlatives. Specific facts are more useful than claims that your service is “the best.”

Use structured data to reinforce visible facts

Schema.org structured data helps describe entities and page content in a machine-readable format. Choose types that match the page and keep the markup consistent with visible information.

Useful starting points include organization details, breadcrumbs, products and articles where appropriate.

Structured data does not replace content, and valid markup does not guarantee rankings, enhanced search displays or AI citations. Its value lies in describing information consistently.

GeoEngine is a Belgian B2B SaaS GEO and AI toolkit for SMEs and marketing agencies. Its lightweight tag dynamically injects page-specific Schema.org JSON-LD without modifying the source code. It also provides sitemap synchronization, IndexNow pings to search engines, daily technical monitoring and schema Auto-Healing.

These features support technical maintenance; they do not determine whether an answer engine selects a page.

Measure visibility with a repeatable question set

Create a manageable list of commercial questions and test them regularly across your target interfaces.

Record:

  • The exact question and test date.
  • The platform and relevant search settings.
  • Brand mentions and linked sources.
  • Accuracy of descriptions about your business.
  • Competitors cited and missing information on your pages.

Answers can vary between runs. Use repeated observations rather than treating one response as a stable ranking.

GeoEngine includes an AI Visibility Check, competitor analysis and Content Gap Analysis. Use visibility findings to prioritize specific improvements, such as clearer service boundaries, stronger comparison pages or corrected business information.

FAQ

Is AEO different from SEO?

AEO focuses on making information usable in generated or spoken answers. SEO supports discovery in search results. They overlap substantially and work best together.

Does adding schema guarantee a ChatGPT citation?

No. Schema can clarify page information, but source selection depends on the system and query. GeoEngine does not guarantee rankings or AI citations.

Should every page include an FAQ?

No. Add FAQs when they resolve genuine questions. Important answers should also appear naturally on the relevant service or product page.

Where should a small business start?

Start with your main service pages, accurate business details and the questions customers ask before buying. Fix accessibility issues before producing large volumes of content.
